Lance's Jigged X-May Black Size 16-20
I took Mike Mercer’s Micro May and Hogan Brown’s S&M and “X” them to form the X-May. I took the best parts of their flies and added a few of mine. This pattern is designed to fish wherever mayflies are found. A fantastic silhouette, great color combinations with texture and a little flash. We tied these on TMC 3769 hooks for years, but I switched it to the Fulling Mills jig hook last year. I have also added Hot Spot versions, one in Olive and one in Brown. The Olive has a fluorescent orange hot spot and the brown a fluorescent fire engine orange hot spot. That moved the X-May from great to fantastic! Fished using a High Stick (Euro) or dead drift underneath an indicator.
The Black X-May is designed to max out the silhouette on dark cloudy days. It is a fly that I depend on when guiding the valley rivers. It represents everything on cloudy days, Beatis, Pale Morning Dun and Midges. It is also a great fly underneath an indicator on a high mountain lakes like Manzanita.
