Feather River, CA
Why the Feather River for Steelhead? The Feather River is home to two prolific Steelhead runs, one in the Fall and the other in the Spring.
The steelhead follows the salmon into the river system. They are fueled by the high protein of the salmon spawn in the fall. At times, these fish act like teenagers, eating with reckless abandon.
The Spring run comes in late March to early April. These fish are mavericks eating sculpins, mayflies, caddis’ and anything else they can get ahold of. These fish also feast on the high protein of the eggs during the Sacramento Sucker spawn.
The Feather River steelhead loves to run and show off its aerobatic leaps to the fly fisher. Whichever run you choose to fish; they are equally fantastic.
The section that runs from Oroville (Oroville Dam) to Gridley, CA is known as the “Feather,” and it’s amazing.
